Although vegan leather is durable, it will not withstand from your dog chewing it.

Vegan Leather (PU),

Today, we see vegan leather materials as being one of the most popular alternatives to traditional animal leather. From luxury brands to fast fashion retail, vegan leather has taken on interest as the eco-friendly and cruelty-free alternative. Vegan leather is a composition of non animal materials such as polyurethane (PU) and as technology evolves, other more sustainable alternatives such as recycled rubber, waxed cotton, cork, and even fruit waste like pineapple leaves and apple peels.

Like most things, the quality can vary.

  1. Ethical and cruelty-free.
  2. Quality vegan leather is softer and more pliable than most animal leathers from day one.
  3. Lighter in weight for comfort and neck support.
  4. Extremely durable. Note - vegan leather will not have the longjevity as full grain or top grain animal leather.
  5. Pigmentation easily applied.
  6. More affordable than animal leather

Animal leather

Although leather is often made of cows’ skin, it can also be made from the skin of pigs, goats, sheep, dogs, and cats as well as crocodiles, ostriches, and other exotic animals. Typically the animals are slaughtered before their skin is torn from their bodies—but sometimes they’re skinned alive, dying slowly and painfully. Also, the toxins used in the tanning process pollutes the Earth.

An overview to leather grades

Full grain leather is the best quality and most expensive

Top-grain leather is the second-highest leather quality of the high-end category of leather products.

Genuine leather products are the lowest in quality. These products are made from leftover leather and do not look or feel as pleasing and will only last for a short time before they wear out. However, most people can afford this type of leather product as they are widely available.

Corrected-grain leather is also referred to as the lesser-known grain. The artificial grain has been embossed on the top and dressed out using dyes and stains. Imperfections are usually sanded off and then corrected. Corrected grain is used to make pigmented leather and readily available in stores as it is more affordable.
